No flowers in Lent, opinions please

We've always put these rather nice arrangements of bare branches around the altar during lent, well not always but as long as I can remember.
And they are striking, and very beautiful and we were pleased with them.
But someone said they thought they were "the decorating equivalent of a Friday night lenten lobster tail." That they violate the spirit of what is supposed to be a "fast" from decoration, that we might as well have a make-up artist do the application of ashes.
Does he have a point? He's a just a man from the parish, not the pastor or liturgist or anything.
(WE are a Roman Catholic parish, just so you know, I see there are Lutherans and others here.)
